Day 4: How Dare You Say You Love Me
Part of my song-a-day writing project for January 2024
Lyrics:
You're a liar, you're a sneak
And you slither like a snake
When you said you were a friend
It was a means to an end
All the coffee, the breakfast
The time I spent with you
Now I know, now I know
Now I know it wasn't true
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you, how dare you
I showed you kindness, gave you care
When you were troubled, when you were scared
I guess Karma's keeping score
And I guess this is my reward
I don't want it, don't need it
Won't carry this heavy load
Take it back, my friend, from now on
You're on your own
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you say you care
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you, how dare you
You don't know what it's like
It's not enough to give your time
Yeah, they all want something more
They want your body, they want your soul
They want devotion, they want it all
Well my heart, it has been taken
And my heart has been forsaken
And I'm sorry you're forlorn
But I have no room for more
Take your poems, your songs
And your awkwardly written prose
Your delusions of love
And I'll show you where they go
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, I don't even love myself
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, give your love to someone else
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you say you care
How dare you, how dare you say you love me
How dare you, how dare you, how dare you...

Details: I ran a bunch of errands today, so I didn't really get started until about 6:30 pm. I had come up with the "How dare you say you love me" part earlier in the day, and was playing around with it. The verses and chorus came pretty easily, but the bridge took a lot of work. I finished it around 10:00.
Long story short, I developed feelings for someone last year, and when I let her know about them, it went really, really badly. Worse than I could've anticipated. Anyway, this is my attempt to both process and try to understand why it went so badly. I didn't know I needed to write it until I started it... music therapy at work.
So much of this song feels familiar to me, and I'm worried I lifted some motifs from other songs. But if I did, I think I'm stealing from multiple songs... if you steal from 5 different songs, you basically have a new song.
At the moment, this tune is too personal for me to give a real assessment. I think it's catchy-- hopefully not monotonous. And hopefully not too cliched.
