Lyrics:
I've been walking down the quarry road
Thinking 'bout all the tales that she told
Words won't pierce her skin or break her bones
Gotta take her down with sticks and stones
Let her go, let her go
I've been hearing things around this town
The subtle jokes and all the snickering sounds
Sick to my stomach and my spirits are low
How could it be I was the last to know
Let her go, let her go
And I go to her in grief
A loaded gun wouldn't give me relief
Her pleading voice left me no choice
But to grant her her release
I've been dragging 'round this pound of flesh
Wondering how to put my demons to rest
Sweet talk and promises won't heal my wounds
I'll tie her up and throw her in a lagoon
Let her go, let her go
I'll tie her up and then I'll throw her away
Let her go
She'll disappear and then we'll hear what they say
Let her go
I can sleep along at home in my bed
Let her go
And I can be at peace as long as she's dead
Let her go
Details: I got going pretty late tonight, so I felt more rushed than usual. I knew I wanted to write something in a minor key, and I was trying to work with the Fearless Songwriting prompt, which was "Road to the Quarry". I quickly settled on writing a murder ballad, specifically with the idea of somebody being thrown into a lake with rocks weighing them down. I don't know if that idea really came through, but that's what I was shooting for.
Musically, I feel like this song shares a similar groove with a lot the bluesy songs I write. It's a good groove, but didn't feel special to me. Lyrically, I didn't really go into specifics; I might rewrite them later to have more interesting details.
Anyway, it took about 2.5 hours to write and an hour to record.
