Day 27: Discount Flyers (with Karen Finch)

Lyrics:

Walking to your house
'Cause my car broke down
Thought it would be nice
To hang around
Knocked on your door
So eager to see your smile

You looked at me Like I was nuts
Stumbling over all your
Ifs, ands or buts
Just to tell me you've
Felt empty for a while

My feet were achin'
And my heart was breakin'
I ran to the bargain bin
Got some brand new shoes

Put on my discount flyers
Gonna dance away these blues
Turn the music up louder
And forget about you

These discount flyers
There's some magic in these shoes
They take me up higher
Until I'm over you

I could be wallowing In my tears
Drowning my sorrows
In a keg of beer
But none of that is ever
Gonna bring you back

Instead I'm kicking
My heels in the air
Whirling around
Like I just don't care
And if you change your mind
You know it's too late, Jack

I got my discount flyers
Gonna dance away these blues
Turn the music up louder
And forget about you

These discount flyers
There's some magic in these shoes
They take me up higher
Until I'm over you

My feet were achin'
And my heart was breakin'
I ran to the bargain bin
Got some brand new shoes

Put on my discount flyers
Gonna dance away these blues
Turn the music up louder
And forget about you

These discount flyers
There's some magic in these shoes
They take me up higher
Until I'm over you

Details: This is the third song Karen and I have written together, and it came out super quick! The last two songs were about cheating in a relationship (one on the negatives of cheating, the other on the positives), so we considered trying to find a new angle on that theme. But Karen was wearing these magnificent athletic shoes and, well, the song just had to be about them (I forgot to take a picture of them; hopefully Karen will post a pic in the comments).

Since Karen likes to write on her slide guitar, it creates an interesting challenge-- she can play major chords really easily, but the minor chords are tricky. Also, I have a hard time figuring out what chords she's playing, just by using my ear. But it all worked out just fine...

This song took about 2 hours to write and an hour to record. My voice was ready to give out by the end; I hope a good night sleep takes care of it, because otherwise it's instrumentals the rest of the way...
