Lyrics:
We heard a crack
And saw the ball going long
They ran around the bases
Then they all went home
The crowd stood up
We heard the roar of the fans
We walked to our opponents
And we shook their hands
Before it slipped away
We held the lead
And the game was ours to lose
We did, we did
The best we could
We did, we did
The best we could
And now it's time to move on
I got to hand it to them
Their team was too strong
I'm going back to where
I once had hoped to leave
To tell my friends about the things
That I had not achieved
At the bar
We shared a common tale
We all had minor victories
Before we finally failed
We drank to St. Christopher
And we drank to St. Jude
And we sang a simple tune
We did, we did
The best we could
We did, we did
The best we could
And now it's time to move on
Turns out
The odds were far too long
And time will give you a second chance
But time still comes to an end
A heart attack has shown
How short my candle burns
For my final wish I bid my family
Hear these words
We did, we did
The best we could
We did, we did
The best we could
And now it's time to move on
Details: Just barely got this song done before midnight, and the video wasn't done until afterward...
I was pretty disappointed with yesterday's song, which seemed silly and poorly conceived, so I went with something more serious today. This song started coming to me at my day job, which is rare-- usually I wait until I'm home to get going. I didn't get too far, but the "We did, we did the best we could" part came first. I'm not sure what else to say, except that I've been a massive loser at times, and songs like this make me feel like I'm not alone, and that it wasn't all a waste of time.
It took about 5 hours to write and 45 minutes to record.
