Lyrics:
I met a dog on the street
We stopped to say hello
Checked her tag for a name
It was a name from long ago
Then I heard a voice call out
"Hey, it's time to go!"
That's when I saw you
In my mind's eye
I felt you again
Flipping through the pages
"Our Deathbeads Will Be Thirsty"
Falling from the spine
A ticket old and dusty
I remember all the music
You never saw the show
I felt an echo
Of you in my arms
I heard you again
Everywhere I look
I see a smear of paint
Or a grocery store receipt
That I thought I'd thrown away
Shoelaces and hair ties
Guitar picks in the couch
The debris of memory
Shuffling through the desk
Found an old address book
Saw your number there
Sure wish I could call you
Details: Jeanne and I have been talking about doing some music projects for the last few months; aside from our cover of "Turn Turn Turn" over the holidays, we had kind of stalled out. Luckily, Song-a-day January is a great way to get unstalled!
We talked about a lot of things, such as the sound of trains approaching from a distance and political rally songs, but we ended up focusing our song on those random moments that remind you of lost relationships. I'll admit, I was in the mood for a sad song, and Jeanne is expert at writing those.
Jeanne had been a bit apprehensive before starting the project, but I think we ended up having a very easy and productive session. We definitely have overlapping tastes when it comes to songwriting techniques, but I learned a few new tricks from her. I really appreciate how well crafted Jeanne's songs usually are, and her attention to detail was on display tonight.
I should also give credit to her dog, Lark, who made me feel very welcome while I was playing guitar on the floor :)
The song took about 3.5 hours to write and 45 minutes to record.
