Lyrics:
I have to break it down, I need to simplify
Guess I'm now your ex, but I don't know why
Had to draw a line, had to make some space
You think we're out of time, I'm feeling out of place
Tried to balance the scales
We couldn't find a way
We spiraled out of control
On Finbonacci Day
The sum of all my faults, the product of my sins
Guess you had a point, these patterns never end
Gotta plot it out, gotta do the math
Gonna figure it out a more rational way
I'll try to balance the scales, I'll try to find a way
But we spiraled out of control on Fibonacci Day
Details: Muriah is one of my comedy buddies down in Denver, but we didn't end up with even a remotely comedic song. Muriah is also a pre-school teacher and has been collecting personal anecdotes about math for a project of hers, so we decided to do a song about math.
The dynamic of the songwriting session was different than the others I've done because Muriah's 3rd grader son, Kai, was there for the first couple hours. It did slow up the process some, but Kai came off as surprisingly musical-- he had a good sense of rhythm with the lyrics and had opinions on the chord structure. I'm not sure if we used any of his ideas, but I was impressed with some of his suggestions.
So this took about three and a half hours together and we were a bit rushed. Muriah had an organ, but we didn't have much time to work out much of an arrangement or a way to sing it together.
