Day 11: Late Night Show
Part of my song-a-day writing project for 2024
Lyrics:
Was a late night show
A late night of music
The bar has closed
And the front door is locked
Drink your backwash beer
Leave your bones in the basket
Grab your gear
Put your tips in your pocket
Collect your pay
And then leave through the alley
As you walk away
To the artist only parking
And the streetlights glow
With a blinking of yellow
It's a long drive home
All alone with the radio
It's wondrous how
We all disappear
The time has come
For us to all disappear
The time has come
For us to all disappear
***
Details: I didn't think I was actually going to write a song today. I woke up late, met with a coaching client, then was part of a troubadour contest that was t 3+ hours long with an hour long drive from home. But then one of the other participants in the troubadour contest, Riley Ann:, said "you're going to write that song in the car on the drive home." And she was right! It was a quiet, meditative drive on a cold night; not much traffic to dodge.
The song I came up with was pretty simple: just trying to catch the common experience of a musician leaving a venue after a late night show. The show I played didn't finish all that late, but it sure felt like it did.
