Day 2: Quit Your Bellyachin'

Day 2: Quit Your Bellyachin’

Lyrics:
I know the further we go
It makes you wanna run away
But we can stick to the plan
We took the time to make it
I think that you can take it, so

Quit your bellyachin' now
Get your ass up off the ground
You know that we've got something to do
There's no time to hesitate
All the other things can wait
Come on, the assignment is due

Going to your room after school
I never know if you'll be there
Confess all your regrets
The only true apology

Quit your bellyachin' now
Get your ass up off the ground
You know that we've got something to do
There's no time to hesitate
All the other things can wait
Come on, the assignment is due

Whoa oh whoa
Taking time for your troubles
Whoa oh whoa
Well it only seems to double all the time

Quit your bellyachin' now
Get your ass up off the ground
You know that we've got something to do
There's no time to hesitate
All the other things can wait
Come on, the assignment is due

Details: Another day with an upset stomach and feeling lethargic, so I decided to write a song about it. You also get to see my bushy pandemic mane unadorned.

I knew that "Quit your bellyachin'" was going to be the chorus, but I wasn't sure where to go from there. At first I was dipping into relationship territory, where one of the couple is upset that the other doesn't want to get married, but I wasn't making headway with that. Then I thought about this movie I watched last night.

It was called "Compulsion" and it starred a young Dean Stockwell (in an amazing performance) as a guy who teams up with another student to prove that they were Nietzschean supermen that could get away with murder (literally). Then they get caught, but Orson Welles chews the scenery and saves them from hanging. It was a dark but brilliant film. Anyway, my key takeaway from it was the student dynamic. I got to thinking about school projects and the contrasting attitudes amongst partners. In this case, I think both the characters in the song come off as a bit obnoxious.

At first, this felt like a by-the-numbers song, but I got more fond of it as I went along. I feel like the melody and groove is pretty solid throughout. The chorus is pretty catchy. Now that I know it's about academics, maybe I need to include more school specific language; then again, maybe I need to take some of that out to make it more universal. Not sure.

Anyway, it took about 4 and a half hours to write and record.
