Day 6: Clear Summer Sky (with Karen Finch)

Lyrics:
That clear summer sky keeps me singing
On long country drives to the sea
I'll play my guitar by the ocean
And dream of the days when we were free

Last summer when I first met you
Life seemed so grand
The summer sky, wide open
While you held my hand

I wanted you here forever
But that wasn't part of the plan
The fun of the season still lingers
When I remember the love that we had

That clear summer sky keeps me singing
On long country drives to the sea
I'll play my guitar by the ocean
And dream of the days when we were free

You said you were taken
You thought I should be aware
We had the rest of the season
And the joy I had kept me there

Fire of desire burned like sand in our toes
Rode curl after curl in the waves
We danced close at night, knowing it was wrong
And laughed when they said to behave

August came upon us much too quickly
We both knew we were coming to an end
We sang "Good Vibrations" at the top of our lungs
Then I watched you drive away 'round the bend

That clear summer sky keeps me singing
On long country drives to the sea
I'll play my guitar by the ocean
And dream of the days when we were free
And dream of the time you spent with me

Details: This is my first co-write of Song-a-day January 2019, and Karen Finch is a return customer. The song we wrote last year wasn't technically in January, but it was done in the same spirit, and we decided to do it officially this time. Last year's song was about a tumultuous relationship, so we decided to write something a bit more positive this time.

A friend of mine had introduced me to this thing called Fearless Songwriting, which is a daily songwriting challenge for one week, and today was the first day. The difference between what they're doing and what I'm doing is that they have prompts, so I suggested to Karen that we use their prompt "A view of the summer sky".

Anyway, writing this went pretty quickly-- it took about 2 hours to write and another hour to practice and record. On a side note, I also recorded the writing session itself, with the idea of putting together a behind-the-scenes video at some point. I won't put that out until February at the earliest, but be on the look out for it.
