Day 13: Combat Ping Pong Drinking Song (with Chelsea Kramer & Troy Fluhr)

Lyrics:
We first threw in the Midlander, the Jedburg Axe on top
Crammed a spare Shillelagh in, the Dirks filled other spots
Finally hustled in the car, made it to the liquor store
The first one wasn't open, so had to stop once more

Sprinted up the mountain top, we were running late
Barely dodged a snow plow, Bailey still awaits
Can't miss the cutting party, the black powder will roar
We got a cider keg to tap and more

We will fight (fight), we will drink (drink)
And then we'll go off and find ourselves some motherfuckin' peace
Is it right (I don't know), is it wrong (maybe so)
We don't care, we're singing Scottish drinking songs

We slashed through all our targets, the powder horn can dry
Told some epic stories of festivals gone by
Finally started drinking and chaos followed suit
A plethora of drinking games ensued

We stormed down to the basement for more open ground
Found ourselves a ping pong table and gathered all around
Little did we know of the upcoming war
When everyone decided what ping pong is truly for

We will fight (fight), we will drink (drink)
And then we'll go off and find ourselves some motherfuckin' peace
Is it right (I don't know), is it wrong (maybe so)
We don't care, we're playing combat ping pong

The game started calmly, the rules followed true
Then someone hit too hard, another followed through
A battle had erupted, no one was keeping score
Combat ping pong was born to leave one sore

Eight people in one room with no decided teams
Just open fire and see who you can cream
We've paddled through the pain now, just keep the balls a-whackin'
There's no mercy anymore

We will fight (fight), we will drink (drink)
And then we'll go off and find ourselves some motherfuckin' peace
Is it right (I don't know), is it wrong (maybe so)
We don't care, we're playing combat ping pong

Details: I had been thinking about experimenting with larger group songwriting, particularly with some of the folks I collaborated with in the 2018 version of Song-a-day January. The natural combo would be the Greek Tank Crew (Troy Fluhr, Chelsea Kramer and Guy Davis); you see, I wrote the theme song for their podcast. Guy got sick at the last minute, so it was just Troy, Chelsea and I. I wrote "Premarital Sax" with Troy last year, so I wanted to concentrate more on Chelsea this time.

At first we were exploring Chelsea's current interest in K-pop, but we found we didn't have the right instruments to pass it off. But Chelsea had already been regaling us with stories from her trip up to a Scottish Renaissance Festival (I think that's what it was), and I'm a fan of Irish Punk Rock, so we decided to bring them together. Troy had brought his saxophone, and I had brought a fancy vest and a fez, but neither seemed appropriate for what we decided to do.

Anyway, this took us about four and a half hours to write and record; though, to be fair, we gabbed a lot at the beginning.
